Matching the store publisher to the company in the terms

Every store listing names a publisher, sometimes shown as the developer or seller. Every casino's terms name the company that runs the account, usually in the opening paragraph or the footer. Comparing the two is the most useful check before installing.

Some examples of the company printed in terms read on 16 September 2026: BetMGM Casino names BetMGM Canada Inc., FanDuel Casino names FanDuel Canada ULC, Hard Rock Bet names Hard Rock Digital (Canada) Limited, and 888 Casino names VHL Ontario Limited. The iGaming Ontario directory lists each gaming website beside its operator, so the same company name should appear there too.

A publisher name that differs from the company in the terms is not automatically a problem, because large groups sometimes publish apps through a parent or sister company. It is, however, a reason to slow down. Open the casino's website in the browser, follow the app link from there, and make sure it lands on the same listing. Signs of a listing to avoid: a brand name with odd spelling, very few downloads next to a household name, reviews that mention being asked for payment details before any sign-in, or a download offered through a message rather than from the casino's own site.

Permissions an app asks for

Casino apps ask for a short list of permissions, and each has a plain purpose.

Location. Expect a prompt asking to use the phone's location. This is a routine account step: casinos in the iGaming Ontario directory confirm where a session takes place before play. Hard Rock Bet's terms, for instance, state at cl. 4.10 that bets cannot be placed until age, identity and location have been verified. Choosing “allow while using the app” is enough for most apps; if the permission is denied, the app simply asks again before a game opens.

Camera. Used to photograph an identity document or a proof of address during the identity check. You can grant it for that step and switch it off afterwards in the phone's settings.

Notifications. Optional. Offers and reminders arrive this way, and many people keep promotional notifications off while leaving account alerts on.

Biometrics. Face or fingerprint sign-in links the app to the lock already on your phone. It is convenient, and it means anyone who can unlock the phone can open the account, so keep the phone lock strong.

An app that asks for contacts, messages or call logs has no clear reason to. Decline, then look at the listing again and compare its publisher with the company named in the terms before going any further.

Securing an online casino app Ontario account

The account holds money and identity documents, so treat the login like a banking login.

• Use a password you have not used anywhere else, ideally created by a password manager.
• Switch on two-step verification if the casino offers it, preferably through an authenticator app rather than text messages.
• Keep the phone's operating system and the app updated.
• Sign out on shared devices, and never let someone else play through your account.
• Check the account's login history or active sessions page, if one exists, after any unusual email.

Deposits and withdrawals on a phone

Payment screens in an app match the ones on the website, and a deposit made in one shows up in the other straight away because both read the same balance. Interac e-Transfer, cards, online banking and e-wallets appear where the casino supports them, and some apps add Apple Pay. BetMGM Casino's payment page, for example, lists Apple Pay alongside Interac e-Transfer, PayPal and cards, and 888 Casino's banking page lists Apple Pay too.

A phone is always within reach, which makes short, frequent sessions easy.
